Behind this piece
The phiran is Kashmir's oldest garment, worn across seasons by men and women in the valley for centuries. This iteration arrives in silk, its surface animated by aari embroidery, a craft practised using a fine hooked needle called the aari, which pulls thread through fabric from below to build the characteristic chain stitch. The paisley motifs here follow a vocabulary refined over generations in the craft quarters of Srinagar and Anantnag. Baby pink silk lends the embroidery an unusual softness, allowing each boteh to read as delicate rather than declarative. A made-to-order garment, stitched only when you choose it.
How to style
Wear it over straight ivory silk trousers for a winter wedding reception, grounding the blush palette with antique gold Kashmiri jhumkas and kolhapuris in nude leather. For a more intimate occasion, layer it over a fitted ribbed turtleneck in ivory and finish with pointed ballet flats. If you are dressing for a festive family gathering, pair the phiran with a fine pashmina stole in cream and a single gold kada. The silhouette is intentionally relaxed; let the embroidery carry the occasion rather than competing with it through excessive accessorising.
Fabric & care
Silk weakens when wet and is highly vulnerable to friction and heat. Dry-clean this phiran after every two or three wears to preserve the aari embroidery, which can distort under mechanical washing. If spot-cleaning at home, use cool water and a drop of mild silk-safe detergent applied gently with a soft cloth. Never wring or twist. Dry flat, away from direct sunlight, which fades both the dye and the thread lustre over time. Store folded in a cotton muslin bag, never compressed beneath heavier garments, and keep one neem leaf in the drawer to deter insects.
