about the piece,

Description

Some garments carry the memory of mountains in every thread, and this Kani Jamawar Nehru jacket is precisely that kind of garment. Woven in the Kani tradition of Kashmir, it employs the ancient twill-tapestry technique in which skilled karigar workers interlace fine wool yarns using small wooden spools called kanis, building the pattern from within the cloth itself rather than printing or embroidering it onto the surface. The result is a fabric of extraordinary density and warmth, animated by the fluid paisleys and flowering motifs that have defined Kashmiri Jamawar weaving for centuries. Wool of this weight and character is well suited to the cooler months, offering genuine insulation without sacrificing the refinement one expects from such a heritage textile. The structured Nehru collar, clean and collarless at the throat, is a silhouette that reads equally well at a winter festivity, a family gathering, or a considered cultural occasion. Wear it over a fine cotton or silk kurta in an ivory or deep cream, and allow the jacket itself to carry the conversation. Narrow trousers or churidar in a complementary solid will complete the ensemble with quiet authority.

the story,

Behind this piece

Kani weaving originates in the Kashmir Valley, perfected over centuries in the villages of Kanihama and Shahpur. The name derives from the small, eyeless wooden bobbins, called kanis, that weavers manipulate by hand to interlock each coloured weft thread without a single shuttle. A single yard of Kani jamawar can require months of uninterrupted labour. The paisley motifs here, known locally as buta and boteh, carry Mughal garden symbolism: cypress trees, flowering almonds, the curved teardrop echoing both flame and river. This jacket preserves that grammar of pattern in wearable wool.

to wear it,

How to style

Wear this jacket over a fine ivory chanderi kurta and straight-cut churidar for a winter festive gathering. The wool ground takes to deep jewel tones, so pair it with a midnight-blue or forest-green kurta to let the woven paisleys read clearly. For a more contemporary layering, try it over a plain silk shirt with tailored trousers and juttis in polished leather. A Kashmiri silver kada worn on one wrist provides the right weight of jewellery without competing with the textile. Reserve embellished sherwanis for other evenings; here, the weave is ornament enough.

to last,

Fabric & care

Wool jamawar asks for patience rather than routine washing. Dry-clean this jacket after every three to four wears, or when genuinely soiled. If you must hand-wash, use cool water with a small amount of mild, pH-neutral soap, never wringing or twisting the fabric. Lay it flat on a clean cotton towel and reshape the shoulders gently while damp. Store folded, not hung, to prevent the shoulders from distorting under their own weight. Cedar blocks discourage moths without chemical odour. A well-rested Kani piece, stored correctly, deepens in lustre across decades.

Each piece is hand-loomed by artisan clusters we work with directly across India. Small irregularities in the weave are the hallmark of handloom — not a defect.
