Behind this piece
Brocade weaving in Varanasi is not merely a craft; it is a centuries-old conversation between the loom and light. The Banarasi weaver works with fine silk warps and metallic or tonal wefts, interlocking them into raised patterns that catch the eye differently at every angle. Kaleidoscope takes its name seriously: the repeat shifts across the fabric like colour seen through turning glass. Woven on a handloom, each pass of the shuttle is deliberate. This is a textile tradition patronised by courts and carried forward by weaving families in the narrow lanes of Varanasi across generations.
How to style
Wear Kaleidoscope as a draped silk saree with a deep-necked raw silk blouse in a single tone pulled from the fabric's own palette, and ivory Kolhapuri flats for a quiet afternoon gathering. For a festive evening, pair it with a fitted brocade blouse and uncut diamond or polki jewellery to honour the textile's own richness without competing with it. A third reading: stitch the fabric into wide-leg trousers worn with a fine Chanderi kurta and oxidised silver earrings for a contemporary occasion that still carries the full weight of the handloom tradition.
Fabric & care
Pure silk brocade rewards careful handling. Dry-clean for the first wash to preserve the structural integrity of the woven motifs and any metallic threads within the weave. If hand-washing at home, use cold water and a silk-specific, pH-neutral cleanser; never wring or twist the fabric. Press on reverse with a cool iron and a cotton press cloth placed between the iron and the silk. Store folded in unbleached muslin, away from direct sunlight, which yellows silk over time. Aired occasionally and stored with care, this fabric will hold its lustre across many seasons.
