Behind this piece
Brocade weaving in India carries centuries of court patronage within its threads. The technique, known as *zari* or *meenakari* brocade depending on the region, finds its most celebrated home in Varanasi, where Banarasi weavers on pit looms interlace supplementary weft threads into silk to create raised, jewel-like motifs. What distinguishes this textile is the structural complexity: each colour shift in the pattern demands a separate shuttle pass. The result is fabric that holds light differently at every angle, hence the name Kaleidoscope. It is not printed. It is constructed, slowly, on a handloom.
How to style
First: commission this as a structured blouse fabric paired with a tissue or georgette Banarasi saree for a wedding reception; finish with uncut diamond jhumkas and gold kolhapuris. Second: cut it into a straight-kurta silhouette worn over wide-leg ivory palazzos for a festive lunch; keep jewellery minimal, perhaps a single gold kada. Third: for the diaspora wardrobe, consider a fitted blazer in this brocade layered over a silk camisole and tailored trousers, a considered nod to heritage at a cultural gala or arts opening.
Fabric & care
Pure silk brocade requires dry cleaning as the default. If hand-washing at home, use cold water and a pH-neutral, silk-specific cleanser; never wring or twist the fabric. Lay flat on a clean cotton towel to absorb moisture, then dry in shade away from direct sunlight, which fades the silk and weakens the zari. Store folded in pure cotton muslin, not plastic, to allow the fibre to breathe. Refold along different lines every few months to prevent permanent crease marks. With attentive care, this fabric will outlast generations.
