the story,

Behind this piece

Zari embroidery carries a lineage stretching back to the Mughal ateliers of Surat and Varanasi, where gold and silver threads were woven into cloth destined for royalty. This border translates that vocabulary into jet black art silk, the darkness of the ground making every sequin and metallic floral motif read with uncommon clarity. The contrast is deliberate and ancient: artisans across Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh have long used deep grounds to amplify the luminosity of zari. Here, that same tension between shadow and shimmer is preserved in each hand-finished flower along the border's length.

to wear it,

How to style

Cut this border into the hem of a raw silk anarkali for a Diwali evening and pair with uncut diamond drops that echo the sequin's cool glint. Alternatively, attach it along the dupatta edge of a charcoal georgette salwar suit for a winter wedding reception, grounding the look with block-heeled mojris in deep burgundy leather. For a contemporary reading, frame a straight-cut black kurta's neckline and cuffs with narrow strips of this border, then wear with slim trousers and oxidised silver jhumkas that let the zari speak without competition.

to last,

Fabric & care

Art silk, a woven viscose, is sensitive to prolonged moisture and friction. Hand-wash in cold water using a gentle, pH-neutral detergent, keeping the embroidered and sequinned border fully submerged for no more than two minutes. Do not wring or twist; press out water gently between dry towels. Dry flat in shade, away from direct sunlight, which fades the black ground irreversibly. Store rolled rather than folded to prevent creasing at the sequin points. A muslin wrap protects the zari threads from oxidising during long storage. Iron only on reverse, at low heat, with a pressing cloth.

Each piece is hand-loomed by artisan clusters we work with directly across India. Small irregularities in the weave are the hallmark of handloom — not a defect.
