about the piece,

Description

Darkness, when woven with intention, becomes its own kind of luminescence. This stole is worked in pure Kashmiri wool, a fibre that carries the cold clarity of the valley in every strand, soft enough to drape without weight, warm enough to last a season. The embroidery is Aari work, a craft practised across the Kashmir Valley in which a fine hooked needle pulls thread into the fabric from above, building motifs stitch by patient stitch into forms that seem to grow rather than be placed. Here, the foliage unfolds across a jet-black ground, each leaf and tendril rendered with the kind of quiet precision that distinguishes a hand-trained eye from any mechanical repetition. Black is a rare choice in Kashmiri embroidery, and it lends this piece an urbane restraint quite distinct from the more festive colourways the region is celebrated for. The result is something that belongs equally to ceremony and to the considered everyday. Wear it over a cream or ivory kurta to let the embroidery speak without competition. It moves just as naturally over a tailored coat for an evening that requires a little more.

the story,

Behind this piece

Aari embroidery takes its name from the hooked needle that Kashmiri craftsmen have wielded for centuries across the valley's wooden workshops. Unlike the flat chain stitch of the plains, Aari work builds its foliage motifs with a fluid, almost botanical logic, each tendril pulled upward through taut wool by a single hooked tool. On this jet-black ground, the technique achieves a particular drama: pale or gilded threads would read as decoration elsewhere, but here every curling leaf becomes a study in restraint. The stole belongs to a lineage of Kashmiri shawl-making that predates Mughal patronage and endures in Srinagar's old-city karkhanas today.

to wear it,

How to style

Drape this stole over a cream or ivory Lucknawi chikan kurta set for winter festive occasions; the black absorbs the pale fabric's delicacy rather than competing with it. For a diaspora dinner or gallery opening, layer it across the shoulders of a tailored ivory or camel wool blazer and let the embroidered foliage trail at the front. At weddings, pair it with a deep jewel-toned silk salwar and finish with antique silver jhumkas and kolhapuri block-heeled sandals. The stole works equally as a wrap over a sari blouse when the evening turns cold.

to last,

Fabric & care

Pure Kashmiri wool is resilient but rewards gentle handling. Hand wash in cold water using a mild, pH-neutral wool wash, never wringing or twisting the fabric. Support the full weight of the stole when lifting it wet, then press flat between two dry cotton towels and reshape before drying in shade. Do not hang to dry, as the weight of water will distort the weave. Iron lightly on the reverse using a pressing cloth. Store folded, never hung, wrapped in muslin or acid-free tissue, and tuck in dried neem leaves to discourage moths over long storage.
