about the piece,

Description

Darkness, when it is this deliberate, becomes its own ornament. The paisley, that ancient teardrop form carried across centuries from the weavers of Kashmir to the block-printers of Rajasthan and Sanganer, finds new life here against a ground of deep, unbroken jet. Small bootis scatter between the larger motifs, a compositional rhythm that speaks to the hand-drawn sensibility of traditional Indian textile design, even as it travels into contemporary wear. The fabric is a fluid rayon, chosen for the way it falls: unhurried, easy against the skin, with a quiet drape that flatters movement. An elasticated waist extending to forty-four inches and a generous thirty-eight-inch length make this a skirt that accommodates the body without negotiation. It is the kind of garment that asks very little of you and returns a great deal. Pair it with a hand-embroidered cotton blouse in ivory or burnt sienna for an afternoon that moves from a gallery to an open-air market. A simple kolhapuri sandal completes the ease without interrupting it.

the story,

Behind this piece

The paisley, known in South Asia as the kairi or mango motif, carries centuries of meaning across Mughal courts, Kashmiri shawl weavers, and the block-print ateliers of Bagru and Sanganer in Rajasthan. The buti, its smaller companion, was scattered across fine muslins by the weavers of Dacca and the embroiderers of Lucknow as a mark of refined intention. Here, both motifs are rendered in print on fluid rayon, their ancient geometry softened into an everyday silhouette. Jet black holds the pattern with quiet authority, letting the forms speak without competition.

to wear it,

How to style

For a relaxed afternoon, pair this skirt with a cotton white or ivory kurta in a straight cut and flat Kolhapuri chappals in tan. For evening, tuck in a sheer georgette blouse in deep wine or forest green and add oxidised silver jhumkas from the craft clusters of Rajasthan. A third reading: layer it with a fitted black full-sleeve top, a structured linen blazer, and block-heeled mules for a work-to-dinner transition. The elastic waist welcomes all three approaches without adjustment.

to last,

Fabric & care

Rayon is a semi-synthetic fibre with the drape of silk and the sensitivity of cotton. Hand wash in cold water using a mild, pH-neutral detergent, and never wring or twist the fabric. Lay flat to dry in shade, as direct sunlight can weaken the fibre over time and fade the print. Once dry, iron on a low setting with a pressing cloth between the iron and the fabric. Store folded loosely, not on a hanger, to prevent the elastic waistband from stretching out of shape.
