the story,

Behind this piece

Aari embroidery takes its name from the hooked needle, the aari, drawn through fabric with a precision that rewards decades of practice. The craft is closely associated with the karigars of Kashmir and later adopted with great fluency by artisans across Lucknow and parts of Gujarat. Here, that tradition meets jet-black georgette, a pairing that lets each floral motif read with the clarity of ink on silk. The border format honours an older convention: embellishment applied separately, then attached, allowing the embroidery itself to be the considered, unhurried work it deserves to be.

to wear it,

How to style

Stitch this border along the hem of an ivory or cream chanderi kurta for a monochrome Diwali look that needs no further ornament. Alternatively, apply it to the dupatta edge of a pale sage salwar suit and wear it to a daytime mehendi with oxidised silver jhumkas and kolhapuri flats. For the most graphic effect, attach it to the neckline of a white cotton anarkali and pair with block-heeled mojris in tan leather. The jet black reads sharply against all pastels and most natural undyed weaves, making it a remarkably versatile workpiece.

to last,

Fabric & care

Georgette is a crepe-weave fabric with a lightly textured surface that remains vulnerable to snagging. Hand-wash in cool water with a mild detergent formulated for delicates, keeping agitation to a minimum. Do not wring; instead, press gently between two dry towels to remove excess water. Dry flat in shade, away from direct sunlight, which can lift the lustre from embroidery threads over time. Store rolled loosely in a muslin cloth rather than folded, to prevent crease lines forming across the embroidered florets. A light steam press on the reverse restores drape beautifully before use.

Each piece is hand-loomed by artisan clusters we work with directly across India. Small irregularities in the weave are the hallmark of handloom — not a defect.
