Behind this piece
Jamdani is among the oldest continuous weaving traditions in the world, its origins traced to the looms of Dhaka and the deltaic villages of undivided Bengal. Recognised by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage, the weave is built without a jacquard mechanism: every boti is inserted by hand, thread by thread, into the plain-weave ground. This saree, rendered in snow white and sylvan green, carries the characteristic diaphanous quality that once made Jamdani cloth legendary across Mughal courts. The all-over boti arrangement speaks to the most classical grammar of the tradition.
How to style
For a morning cultural gathering, drape this in the traditional Bengali Atpoure style and pair with a sleeveless raw-silk blouse in ivory. At a literary evening or arts opening, a deep bottle-green full-sleeved blouse heightens the sylvan green ground beautifully. For a summer wedding as a guest, choose a sheer organza blouse in champagne and layer with a long oxidised-silver necklace and Kolhapuri block-heeled sandals. Across all three occasions, keep accessories restrained: Jamdani's woven surface is the ornament, and anything heavier competes rather than complements.
Fabric & care
Pure cotton Jamdani demands patient handling. Hand-wash in cold water using a mild, pH-neutral detergent; machine cycles loosen the supplementary weft threads that form each boti. Do not wring. Roll the saree gently inside a clean cotton towel to remove excess water, then dry flat in shade, away from direct sun, which yellows white cotton over time. Iron on a low-to-medium setting while slightly damp, on the reverse side. Store folded in a soft muslin cloth, away from damp, and refold along different lines each season to prevent permanent crease lines.
