the story,

Behind this piece

Phulkari, meaning "flower work," originates in the agrarian heartland of Punjab, where women once spent years filling the warp of coarse khaddar cloth with radiant silk thread, stitch by stitch, from the wrong side. Traditionally made as dowry pieces by Punjabi families, these embroideries moved outward from domestic ritual into ceremonial dress. This fabric carries that same impulse: dense floral motifs worked across jaffa-orange cotton, the colour itself reminiscent of harvest abundance. The gota border, a Rajasthani ribbon-weaving tradition, arrives here as a considered finishing note, lending a metallic warmth that flatters the ground cloth.

to wear it,

How to style

For a daytime festivity, stitch the fabric into a straight kurta and pair it with ivory palazzo trousers and tan kolhapuris. At a mehendi or sangeet, a flared anarkali silhouette in this cotton works beautifully with antique gold jhumkas and a woven mojari in mustard. For a more restrained look, cut the kurta short and wear it over white churidar with oxidised silver bangles stacked at the wrist. The chiffon dupatta, draped loose over one shoulder, completes all three outfits without competing with the embroidery.

to last,

Fabric & care

Hand-wash the cotton separately in cool water using a gentle, pH-neutral detergent. Do not soak for more than five minutes, as prolonged immersion can loosen the silk embroidery thread. Rinse without wringing; press between two dry towels and hang in shade. Iron on a low-cotton setting from the reverse side, placing a thin cloth over the phulkari work to protect the stitches. Store the chiffon dupatta folded loosely in muslin, away from direct light, to prevent the delicate weave from snagging or yellowing over time.
