the story,

Behind this piece

Jamawar weaving traces its lineage to the shawl ateliers of Kashmir, where Persian-influenced boteh motifs were once woven in pure pashmina for Mughal courts. The Kani technique, named for the small wooden spool used in place of a conventional shuttle, produces those distinctive interlocked colour fields that seem to shift in different light. This fabric brings that tradition to Amritsar, where Punjabi weavers have long adapted Kashmiri design vocabulary into accessible polywool constructions, making the elaborate grammar of Jamawar available across seasons and budgets without surrendering its essential visual richness.

to wear it,

How to style

Stitch the kameez in a straight, slightly relaxed silhouette to let the multicolour Kani weave remain the focal point. For festive lunches or a mehendi gathering, pair with wide-leg churidar in deep teal and block-heeled juttis in antique gold. The jade ground reads beautifully against kundan earrings set with uncut stones. For a quieter register, style with ivory cigarette trousers, a structured brocade clutch, and oxidised silver jhumkas. The dupatta, draped loosely off one shoulder, needs no further embellishment; the weave carries the occasion entirely on its own.

to last,

Fabric & care

Polywool holds its shape well but rewards gentle handling. Dry-clean is the safest option, particularly for the Kani-woven dupatta, where multiple colour threads are locked at intervals across the width. If hand-washing, use cool water with a mild, pH-neutral detergent; never wring or twist the fabric. Press on a low-heat wool setting with a pressing cloth between iron and surface. Store folded in soft muslin, away from direct light, to preserve the jade ground's depth. Avoid prolonged hanging, which can distort the shoulder line over time.
