Behind this piece
Kasavu is Kerala's most quietly authoritative textile tradition. Woven predominantly in the Chendamangalam and Balaramapuram clusters, it draws its identity from a single, luminous contract: undyed cotton and gold zari, nothing more. The ivory ground here is pure cotton, kept deliberately unbleached in the spirit of the mundum neriyathum, and across its surface, small zari bootis mark the weave with a restrained celebration. This three-piece interpretation extends the kasavu logic into contemporary silhouette without disturbing its essential dignity. The gold holds no pretence. It simply belongs.
How to style
Wear the kurta with its matching cotton salwar for a Vishu gathering or a temple occasion, finishing with oxidised gold jhumkas and flat Kolhapuri sandals in tan leather. For a daytime literary event or cultural afternoon, pair just the kurta with ivory wide-leg trousers and a single gold bangle. The dupatta, draped across one shoulder and secured with a south Indian-style gold pin, transforms the ensemble into something close to ceremonial. Carry a small brass-toned clutch; avoid anything synthetic or heavily embellished.
Fabric & care
Pure cotton kasavu demands patience, not effort. Hand wash in cool water with a gentle, pH-neutral detergent, keeping the zari border away from prolonged soaking, which can weaken the metallic thread. Do not wring. Roll gently in a clean cotton towel and dry flat in shade, never under direct sun, which yellows undyed cotton over time. Iron on medium heat while slightly damp, on the reverse side. Store folded in a muslin cloth, not plastic. Starching occasionally restores the crisp drape this fabric was woven to carry.
