Behind this piece
Soof embroidery belongs to the Sodha Rajput and Meghwal communities of Kutch, Gujarat, and it is among the most mathematically precise textile arts practised in India today. The name derives from the Sindhi word for "fine," and rightly so: the embroiderer counts the warp and weft threads of the ground fabric before placing a single stitch, building geometric forms from the reverse side outward. On this ivory merino ground, that discipline produces a field of mirrored motifs in silk threads, each colour chosen with the restraint of a practiced hand. The stole carries centuries of desert geometry into a modern shoulder.
How to style
Drape this stole loosely over a stone-coloured cashmere kurta for a winter literary evening; the multicolour Soof geometry does the speaking. For a festive daytime gathering, layer it over an ivory or ecru silk sari, letting the embroidery border frame the shoulder. On cooler mornings abroad, knot it softly over a camel wool coat with dark straight trousers and tan juttis. Across all three looks, choose jewellery with restraint: a single pair of oxidised silver jhumkas or a thin gold kada honours the craft without competing with the embroidered surface.
Fabric & care
Merino wool is resilient but rewards careful handling. Hand wash in cool water, below 30 degrees Celsius, using a pH-neutral wool wash or diluted baby shampoo. Do not wring or twist; press water out gently and reshape the stole flat on a clean towel before drying in shade. Avoid direct sunlight, which yellows ivory fibres over time. Steam lightly with a pressing cloth if needed, never iron directly. Store folded, not hung, in a breathable cotton bag with a cedar block to deter moths. Treated well, merino holds its softness and lustre for many years.
