the story,

Behind this piece

Surat has been India's textile capital for centuries, a city where Persian, Mughal, and coastal trading influences converged into a singular language of embellished cloth. This ivory chiffon carries that lineage: metallic thread flowers worked across its surface in the zardozi-adjacent tradition of cutdana and dabka embroidery that Surat's ateliers refined under Mughal patronage. Chiffon itself demands considerable skill from the embroiderer, as its sheer, mobile weave offers little resistance to the needle. The result is a fabric that feels almost weightless, the floral motifs catching light with every movement.

to wear it,

How to style

Cut this into a kurta with wide palazzo trousers in ivory or deep champagne silk for a festive lunch or a mehendi gathering. Alternatively, layer it as a dupatta over a plain ivory anarkali, letting the metallic flowers sit at the neckline. For a contemporary silhouette, have a blouse cut from this fabric and pair it with a hand-woven Banarasi tissue saree. Complement any of these looks with polki or uncut-diamond earrings and strappy kitten heels in nude or gold. Keep the neck uncluttered so the embroidery reads clearly.

to last,

Fabric & care

Chiffon is a loosely woven, delicate weave that snags and distorts under agitation. Dry-clean this fabric before cutting and after stitching, particularly given the metallic thread embroidery, which can tarnish or loosen in water. If dry-cleaning is not possible, hand-wash in cold water with a mild, pH-neutral detergent, supporting the full length of the fabric at all times. Do not wring or twist. Dry flat in shade, away from direct sunlight. Store folded in soft muslin, not plastic, to prevent moisture build-up and thread oxidation over time.
