about the piece,

Description

Lucknow exhales slowly, and what emerges is this. Chikankari is among the most meditative of India's needle arts, a tradition nurtured for centuries in the narrow lanes of Lucknow where artisans coax shadow-work, phanda, and murri stitches from thread so fine it seems to dissolve into the cloth. Here, that inherited patience finds expression on fluid georgette, a fabric whose gentle drape allows the embroidery to move and breathe rather than sit stiff against the body. The kurta carries an all-over composition of white threadwork set against grounds of blue, green, or red, each shade lending the piece a distinct character, from cool contemplative evenings to celebrations rich with colour. Georgette's lightweight weave makes this set equally suited to Eid gatherings, festive dinners, and long ceremonial afternoons where comfort cannot be sacrificed to elegance. Wear it with mojaris in tan or ivory to honour the Nawabi sensibility from which Chikankari was born. A simple silk stole in a tonal shade will complete the silhouette without crowding the embroidery's quiet eloquence.

the story,

Behind this piece

Chikankari is Lucknow's most intimate conversation between needle and cloth, a craft that flourished under Nawabi patronage in the courts of Awadh. Skilled artisans, known as karigar communities concentrated in the old city's mohallas, work this shadow embroidery by hand, pulling thread through fabric to create forms that read differently in light and shade. On georgette, the stitches float with particular grace, the sheer ground fabric allowing the white threadwork to breathe and shimmer. Each motif, whether phanda, murri, or bakhiya, carries centuries of muscle memory passed quietly through generations.

to wear it,

How to style

In blue, wear this set with silver kolhapuri chappals and a moonstone ring for an evening gathering that favours understated elegance. The green colourway pairs beautifully with raw silk mojris in ivory and a single strand of freshwater pearls, suited to a daytime festivity or mehendi ceremony. Red calls for something bolder: polished nagra shoes in tan and gold jhumkas from the Rajasthani kaarigari tradition. Avoid heavy stoles that obscure the embroidery. Let the georgette move freely. A fine silk pocket square in a tonal shade completes each look with quiet confidence.

to last,

Fabric & care

Georgette is a fine, crepe-weave fabric that rewards patience. Hand wash this kurta separately in cold water with a mild, pH-neutral detergent, and avoid wringing, which distorts the weave and strains Chikankari threads at their roots. Rinse gently, then press the fabric flat between clean cotton towels to draw out excess water. Dry in shade away from direct sunlight, which fades the dye gradually. Iron on a low setting through a damp muslin cloth. Store folded in a clean cotton muslin bag, never in plastic, to allow the fabric to breathe across seasons.
