Behind this piece
Ikat is among the oldest resist-dyeing traditions on the subcontinent, with deep roots in Odisha, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh. In this angavastram, the technique reveals itself through the characteristic soft-edged geometry of graph-check patterns, a result of yarn being tied and dyed before it ever meets the loom. Cotton ikat weavers across the Pochampally and Sambalpur belts have refined this vocabulary across generations, building rhythm from repetition. Each crosshatch in the weave carries the evidence of that pre-loom planning: a quiet intelligence worked into cloth before the shuttle even begins its journey.
How to style
Drape this angavastram across a plain white kurta for a terrace dinner where restraint reads as elegance. The earthy warmth of Buckthorn Brown or the cool depth of Teal pairs particularly well with off-white cotton or khadi trousers. For a more considered occasion, layer it over a silk kurta in ivory and finish with oxidised silver cuff links or a temple-craft ring. Elm Green alongside handwoven kolhapuris grounds the look in craft heritage without effort. The graph-check scale is measured enough to sit well against both solid and subtly textured base garments.
Fabric & care
Cotton ikat requires a considered hand. Wash separately in cold water on a gentle cycle, or by hand using a mild, pH-neutral detergent. The resist-dyed yarns can release trace colour in the first few washes, so avoid washing alongside light garments initially. Do not wring. Dry flat in shade to prevent the weave from distorting along the bias. A cool iron on the reverse preserves the surface integrity of the ikat patterning. Store folded loosely in a breathable cotton bag rather than compressed in a drawer. Proper care extends the life of this cloth by years.
