about the piece,

Description

There is a quietness to this colour, the pale, glacial green of still water before dawn, that asks nothing of you except to be worn well. Cut from satin that catches light with a liquid, unhurried ease, this sleeveless night dress is worked in Aari embroidery, a craft practised for centuries in the valleys of Kashmir, where artisans guide a fine hooked needle through fabric to trace florals and scrolling vines with uncommon precision. The thread work here is restrained rather than ornate, lending the garment an intimacy that suits the private hours it is made for. Satin, with its cool weight and smooth drape, is a considered choice for a night dress, offering comfort without sacrificing the sense that one is wearing something genuinely beautiful. This is a made-to-order piece, sewn with attention to the individual rather than the crowd. Pair it with a silk robe in ivory or soft gold for evenings when home itself becomes the occasion. The embroidery rewards low, warm light particularly well.

the story,

Behind this piece

Aari embroidery takes its name from the hooked needle, the aari, that Kashmiri craftsmen have wielded for centuries across the Dal Lake valley. Unlike flat surface embroidery, aari work is pulled through the fabric from below, creating a chain-stitch loop of extraordinary precision. The craft clusters around Srinagar and its surrounding townships, where families have passed the technique across generations, often working in cooperative workshops called karkhanas. Here, that same devotion is brought to satin, its cool liquid surface answering the delicate chain of thread in a shade the valley's glacial waters might recognise.

to wear it,

How to style

Worn alone, this night dress reads as effortless evening wear for a summer gathering at home or a quiet rooftop dinner. Pair it with flat Kolhapuri sandals in tan leather and a single strand of fresh-water pearls for an understated finish. For a cooler evening, layer a sheer silk organza dupatta in ivory across the shoulders. If dressing for a pre-wedding mehendi, add oxidised silver jhumkas and block-printed mules. The iceberg-green tone sits beautifully against warm and deep skin tones alike, requiring very little adornment to feel complete and intentional.

to last,

Fabric & care

Satin, whether woven from polyester or silk-blend fibres, rewards caution. Hand-wash this garment in cold water using a mild, pH-neutral detergent, and never wring or twist the fabric. The aari embroidery threads can loosen under machine agitation, so gentle hand movement is essential. Roll the dress in a clean cotton towel to absorb moisture, then lay flat to dry away from direct sunlight, which dulls satin's characteristic sheen over time. Store folded in a breathable muslin bag, not a plastic cover. Press only on reverse, using a cool iron with a pressing cloth between the iron and the fabric.
