Behind this piece
The paisley, known in the subcontinent as kairi or mango motif, traces its origins to the royal ateliers of Persia and Kashmir, where it came to symbolise the cypress tree bowed by wind, a figure of resilience and grace. In this kurta, the motif is rendered in sequin-scattered embroidery against art silk, a fabric that carries the luminous drape of mulberry silk at a more accessible register. The hazel-brown ground recalls the warm, earthy palettes favoured in Mughal-era brocades, grounding the festive shimmer of the embroidery in something quieter and considered.
How to style
For a Diwali gathering or an engagement ceremony, pair this kurta with ivory churidar pyjamas and tan mojris in Punjabi khussa style. A kundan choker in antique gold will echo the sequin work without competing with it. For a daytime mehendi function, wear it over straight-fit off-white trousers with kolhapuri sandals and a simple wooden bead bracelet. To dress it down for a festive lunch, layer it open over a white kurta as a jacket, cinching loosely with a fabric belt in a complementary chai-brown tone.
Fabric & care
Art silk, woven from viscose or polyester filaments rather than natural protein fibres, requires gentle handling to preserve its sheen and the integrity of its embroidered sequins. Hand-wash in cool water with a mild, pH-neutral detergent; do not wring or scrub. Rinse once and press dry between two cotton towels. Dry flat in shade, never in direct sunlight, which strips lustre quickly. Steam-press on a low setting with a pressing cloth between the iron and the fabric. Store folded in a muslin bag, away from moisture and sharp-edged jewellery.
