Handspun Men's Dushala Shawl (Lohi) from Kullu with Embroidered Border
Dry clean recommended. Store with natural cedar or neem leaves. Avoid direct sunlight and moisture.
Description
There are shawls that keep you warm, and then there are shawls that carry a valley within their weave. This Dushala Lohi from Kullu is spun by hand from wool that absorbs the particular cold of the Beas river corridor, where the craft of shawl-making has belonged to the hills for generations. The handspun yarn gives the fabric a quiet irregularity, a softness that no machine can replicate, and a weight that settles on the shoulders with easy authority. Along the borders, embroidery traces the geometric vocabulary that Kullu weavers have kept alive across centuries, rendered here in the grounded tones of Atmosphere, Ivory, and Pine Bark. These are colours borrowed from pine-shadowed slopes and winter mornings, colours that ask nothing of the wearer except that he meet them honestly. A shawl of this kind sits as naturally with a wool kurta on a winter evening as it does wrapped loosely over a blazer for a long journey. Drape it across one shoulder or fold it over both; either way, it wears like something inherited rather than purchased.

Behind this piece
The Kullu valley has woven its identity into wool for centuries. Known locally as a *lohi*, this dushala shawl belongs to a living tradition practised by weaver communities in Himachal Pradesh, where handspun wool is worked on pit looms against a backdrop of deodar forests and high passes. The embroidered border, characterised by the geometric motifs particular to Kullu's textile vocabulary, is stitched after weaving, adding a second layer of human hours to each piece. In shades named Atmosphere, Ivory, and Pine Bark, the palette borrows directly from the valley's own landscape.
How to style
Wear the Atmosphere colourway draped over a cream kurta-pyjama for a winter wedding's evening baithak, secured with a carved silver brooch from Himachal. For a more considered daily look, fold the Pine Bark shawl across the shoulders of a dark wool bandhgala and pair with leather mojris. The Ivory serves beautifully at a puja or family gathering: lay it loosely over a silk kurta, letting the embroidered border fall visibly at the front edge. All three colourways sit equally well against both handloom cottons and fine wools.
Fabric & care
Handspun wool holds natural lanolin, which lends resilience but demands gentleness. Hand wash in cold water with a mild, pH-neutral soap, avoiding any wringing or twisting. Rinse once, press water out gently between two dry towels, then dry flat in shade away from direct sunlight. Never hang a wet shawl; the weight distorts the weave. Store folded, not rolled, wrapped in muslin with a few dried neem leaves to discourage moths. Treated this way, a well-made lohi can last a generation and softens beautifully with each careful wash.
