Behind this piece
Aari embroidery takes its name from the hooked needle, the aari, that artisans draw through taut fabric stretched over a wooden frame. The craft is most closely associated with the workshops of Kashmir and the ateliers of Lucknow, where needle meets cloth in a continuous, looping chain. On this greenlake art silk, the floral motifs bloom with the density and rhythm that only hand-guided work can produce. The printed red dupatta answers the embroidery with warmth, its colour pulled from the heart of the blossoms stitched into the suit itself.
How to style
For a festive afternoon, wear the suit as it comes and let the printed dupatta drape loosely across one shoulder, secured with a kundan brooch. Pair with block-heeled mojris in tan or ivory. For an evening gathering, fold the dupatta into a structured drape and add long polki jhumkas to draw the eye to the neckline. On a cooler day, layer a fine ivory pashmina stole over the shoulders, leaving the embroidered bodice visible. Kolhapuri sandals with gold detailing complete each look without competing with the embroidery.
Fabric & care
Art silk is a woven cellulosic fibre that holds colour well but dislikes prolonged moisture and rough handling. Hand wash in cool water with a mild, pH-neutral detergent; never wring or twist the fabric. Rinse gently, roll in a clean cotton towel to draw out water, then dry flat in shade. Iron on a low setting with a pressing cloth placed between the iron and the embroidered surface. Store folded in a breathable muslin bag, away from direct light, to preserve both the sheen of the base fabric and the integrity of the aari threadwork.
