the story,

Behind this piece

Katan georgette occupies a singular place in Banarasi textile history. Woven on handlooms in the narrow lanes of Varanasi, it combines the taut structure of katan silk with the airy drape of georgette, a pairing that demands exceptional technical control from the weaver. The large paisleys here, rendered in zari golden thread, follow a design vocabulary rooted in Mughal-era buta motifs that Banarasi karigar communities have refined across generations. Each paisley is woven into the ground cloth, not printed, not embroidered, making every metre a small act of sustained, deliberate craft.

to wear it,

How to style

Cut this into an anarkali kurta and pair it with churidar in ivory silk for a Diwali gathering; the weight will hold pleats beautifully and the gold paisleys will catch candlelight with quiet drama. Alternatively, drape it as a saree with a broad-bordered blouse in deep forest green dupion, accessorised with uncut polki earrings and kolhapuri heels. For a contemporary silhouette, consider wide-leg palazzo trousers topped with a cropped, structured blouse in matching fabric; add oxidised silver bangles to ground the gold without competing with it.

to last,

Fabric & care

Pure katan georgette is a delicate silk that rewards careful handling. Dry clean after every two to three wears, particularly where zari is present, as hand washing risks distorting both the silk twist and the golden thread. If spot cleaning at home, use cold water only and press gently without wringing. Store folded loosely in a breathable cotton muslin bag, away from direct light, which can yellow silk over time. Never hang on a wire hanger. Lightly air between wears. With attentive storage, Banarasi silk holds its lustre for decades.
