Behind this piece
Block printing on cotton is one of India's oldest textile arts, practised with particular distinction in Rajasthan, where towns like Bagru and Sanganer have shaped the craft over centuries. The Chhipa community of printers, hereditary artisans who have worked with natural pigments and carved wooden blocks for generations, bring this discipline to every length of cloth. The grape-jam colourway, a deep, dusty berry settled between plum and aubergine, reflects the earthy, iron-rich palette traditional to Bagru's resist-printing tradition. Each impression is hand-laid, block by block, making precise repetition a matter of skilled human judgement.
How to style
Wear the co-ord together for a considered, dressed-up look at a gallery opening or festive lunch, anchored with kolhapuri block-heeled sandals and oxidised silver chandelier earrings. For a lighter register, pair the trousers alone with a white mul-cotton kurta and tan leather slides on a warm afternoon. The deep berry tone sits beautifully against gold: try the kurta top with straight-cut camel trousers and a simple gold choker for an evening gathering where you wish to look deliberate without effort. The side pockets make each option genuinely practical.
Fabric & care
Pure cotton breathes and softens with every wash, but block-printed surfaces deserve particular attention. Wash in cold water by hand, or machine-wash on a gentle cycle inside out, using a mild, pH-neutral detergent. Avoid soaking, which loosens pigment over time. Do not wring; press out water gently and dry flat or on a wide hanger away from direct sun, which fades the berry tone. Iron on medium heat while slightly damp, on the reverse side. Stored folded in a cool, dry place, well-cared-for cotton block prints deepen beautifully in character across years of wear.
