Behind this piece
The Bagdoo block-print tradition belongs to the sun-baked hinterlands of Madhya Pradesh, where artisans press hand-carved wooden blocks into natural-dye pastes with a precision inherited across generations. Gothic-olive, that rare meeting of forest shadow and antiquity, is achieved through layered resist-printing onto pure silk, a surface that accepts pigment with unusual depth and luminosity. The motifs, geometric and unhurried, carry the grammar of Central Indian folk aesthetics, distinct from the florid vocabulary of Rajasthan or Bengal. Each repeat in the yardage is a small act of calibration, never mechanical, always particular.
How to style
For a literary festival or gallery opening, drape this sari in a Nivi pleat and pair it with a raw-silk blouse in warm ivory; add oxidised silver ear-drops and kolhapuri flats. For a winter wedding as a guest, choose a full-sleeved velvet blouse in deep burgundy and finish with antique gold bangles. On a quiet weekend, try the sari draped loosely over a fitted kurta in cream cotton, belted at the waist, with leather juttis in cognac brown, letting the olive ground do the quiet, confident work.
Fabric & care
Pure silk is a protein fibre that rewards patience. Dry-clean this sari for the first wash to preserve the block-print integrity; thereafter, hand-wash in cold water using a pH-neutral, soap-free cleanser. Never wring or twist the fabric. Lay flat on a clean cotton towel to absorb moisture, then dry in full shade away from direct sunlight, which fades natural-dye pigments irreversibly. Store folded in soft muslin, never in plastic, and refold along different lines every few months to prevent permanent crease-setting. A cedar block nearby discourages insects without chemical damage.
