the story,

Behind this piece

Gota Patti is the language of Rajasthan's celebratory spirit, originating in the royal ateliers of Jaipur where metallic ribbon-work adorned the garments of queens and nobility. Here, that legacy meets the needle-precision of Aari embroidery, a craft practised across both Rajasthan and Lucknow, where a fine hook pulls thread into looping, luminous patterns. The pairing of the two on silk produces something genuinely rare: architectural shimmer alongside breathing, tactile detail. In beige and black, the border carries the restraint of a contemporary sensibility without surrendering an ounce of its historical weight.

to wear it,

How to style

Stitch this border along the hem of a raw-silk kurta in ivory or champagne for a Diwali gathering, and let Kundan drop earrings carry the conversation upward. For a winter wedding reception, apply it to the edge of a dupatta draped over a mirror-work lehenga; the black grounds the gold beautifully. On a simpler register, attach it to the neckline of a linen anarkali for a mehendi afternoon, and pair with kolhapuris in tan leather. The beige-and-black combination asks for very little and rewards that restraint generously.

to last,

Fabric & care

Silk is a protein fibre that weakens under heat and harsh chemistry. Hand-wash this border separately in cold water using a mild, pH-neutral detergent, never wringing or twisting the fabric. The Gota Patti ribbon-work is particularly vulnerable to snagging, so turn the piece face-inward before any contact with water. Dry flat in shade away from direct sunlight, which yellows silk over time. Store rolled in unbleached muslin rather than folded, to prevent crease lines forming across the metallic ribbon. Avoid cedar balls; use dried neem leaves instead, which are gentler on silk and traditional to Indian textile storage.
