Golden Narrow Border with Embroidered Squares and Sequins
Dry clean only. Store folded in a soft muslin pouch away from direct sunlight to keep the sheen alive.
Behind this piece
Zardozi and sequin embroidery on narrow borders carries a long lineage in the ateliers of Lucknow and Bhopal, where karigars have long translated courtly aesthetics into wearable ornament. Art silk, a spun viscose yarn that mimics the lustre of pure mulberry silk, became the practical companion to such work in the twentieth century, making intricate embellishment accessible without sacrificing sheen. The repeated square motif here draws from geometric chikankari and phulkari traditions, rendering each unit of the border a small, considered composition. This is trim as quiet architecture, not mere decoration.
How to style
Stitch this border along the hem and neckline of a plain ivory or dusty-rose chanderi kurta for a Diwali gathering, and let the gold carry the jewellery work so earrings can remain simple gold drops. For a reception lehenga, apply it to the dupatta edge over a deep teal base fabric, pairing with juttis in antique gold leather. Wedding guest dressing benefits enormously from a single run of this border along the sleeve cuff of a tissue silk kurta; a polki bracelet and block-heeled mojris complete the register without competing.
Fabric & care
Art silk is a cellulosic fibre and weakens when wet, so hand-washing in cold water with a gentle, pH-neutral detergent is essential. Do not wring or twist; press the water out gently and lay flat on a clean cotton towel to dry away from direct sunlight, which yellows the gold sequins over time. Iron on the reverse side using a low setting, placing a pressing cloth between the iron and the embroidery. Store rolled loosely in acid-free tissue inside a cotton pouch, never folded on the embroidered surface, to preserve both sequin adhesion and thread tension.
