the story,

Behind this piece

Banaras has been weaving gold into silk for over five centuries, and this brocade carries that unbroken lineage in every thread. The Kasim family, rooted in the weaving quarters of Varanasi, works the pit loom with a precision passed down through generations. The technique is kadwa brocade, where each floral motif is individually woven rather than floated, resulting in a density that feels almost architectural to the touch. The gold zari catches light differently at every hour, giving the fabric a quiet luminosity that no printed textile can replicate. This is handloom at its most regal.

to wear it,

How to style

Cut this brocade into a structured kurta with a bateau neckline and wear it over wide-legged silk palazzo trousers for a winter wedding reception. For a reception lehenga, pair the skirt in this fabric with a plain georgette dupatta in ivory so the brocade speaks without competition. At a smaller festive gathering, a brocade blouse beneath a Benarasi or Kanjeevaram sari in complementary tones makes a considered statement. Finish with uncut diamond jhumkas or polki chokers, and block-heeled mojris in tan or ivory. The fabric commands simplicity everywhere around it.

to last,

Fabric & care

Pure silk zari brocade must never meet a washing machine. Hand wash gently in cool water with a mild, pH-neutral detergent, or dry-clean for the safest result. Never wring or twist the fabric; press it flat between dry towels to remove excess moisture. Iron on the reverse side using a low-heat silk setting, placing a thin cotton cloth between iron and fabric. Store folded in a soft muslin cloth, not polythene, to allow the silk to breathe. Refold along different lines periodically to prevent permanent crease marks along the zari.

Each piece is hand-loomed by artisan clusters we work with directly across India. Small irregularities in the weave are the hallmark of handloom — not a defect.
