about the piece,

Description

There are dupattas that accessorise an outfit, and then there are dupattas that complete a story. This golden-cream piece draws from the Kalamkari tradition of Telangana, where the language of paisleys, florals, and mythic motifs has been refined over centuries in the workshops of Srikalahasti and Machilipatnam. Here, those time-honoured motifs are rendered through block printing on art silk, a fabric that carries light with a quiet luminosity, letting the warm cream ground and the deep printed paisleys speak without competition. A zari border runs along the edge, lending the kind of restrained formality that feels considered rather than ornate. The result is a dupatta that honours its regional origins while remaining entirely wearable across seasons and settings, from festive afternoons to formal evenings. Pair it with a pale kurta in cotton or chanderi to let the Kalamkari patterning hold centre stage, or drape it over silk separates in ivory or gold for a tonal layering that feels effortlessly ceremonial.

the story,

Behind this piece

Kalamkari, whose name translates literally as "pen work," has its roots in the temple towns of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, where artists once narrated mythological stories across vast lengths of cloth. The Srikalahasti and Machilipatnam traditions developed distinct voices over centuries: one drawn by hand, the other printed through carved wooden blocks. This dupatta draws from the Machilipatnam lineage, where paisley motifs have been refined across generations into something almost architectural. The zari border carries the golden formality that once edged court textiles, here rendered in art silk for a luminous, accessible weight.

to wear it,

How to style

Drape this dupatta over a deep-jewel-toned anarkali in bottle green or burgundy for a Diwali gathering, letting the cream ground do the work of lightening the silhouette. For afternoon occasions, pair it with a rust or terracotta kurta in cotton, keeping the palette earthy and unhurried. It also sits beautifully over a plain ivory salwar set, where the zari border becomes the sole statement. In all three combinations, choose oxidised silver earrings or temple-gold jhumkas, and finish with kolhapuri sandals or block-heeled juttis for a grounded, heritage-led look.

to last,

Fabric & care

Art silk rewards gentleness. Hand wash in cold water using a mild, ph-neutral detergent, keeping the dupatta fully submerged rather than rubbing or wringing. Rinse once, gently press out excess water between two dry towels, and hang in shade away from direct sunlight, which dulls both the printed pigments and the zari. Never tumble dry. Once fully dry, iron on a low-heat silk setting with a pressing cloth between the iron and the fabric to protect the zari border. Store loosely folded in a breathable muslin bag, away from humidity and sharp jewellery clasps.
