about the piece,

Description

Some silences have a colour, and this shawl holds the particular quiet of a Kashmiri winter morning. Woven from pure Pashmina, the fibre combed from the underbelly of Changthangi goats grazed on the high plateaus of Ladakh, it carries that rare warmth which feels almost weightless against the skin. The ground is a composed glacier-grey, a tone that neither asserts nor retreats, and across it the Sozni needle has drawn a Jalidar foliage pattern in the most patient of hands. Jalidar work, characterised by its latticed, all-over repeat of leaves and tendrils, belongs to the finer traditions of Srinagar's embroidery quarters, where a single shawl may occupy a craftsman for several months. The result is a surface that rewards close attention, each stitch a small act of devotion rendered in thread. Wear it draped loosely over an ivory silk kurta for a winter gathering, or fold it as a wrap over a structured coat when the occasion calls for something quietly authoritative. The grey ground accepts ivory, charcoal, and deep burgundy with equal grace.

the story,

Behind this piece

Sozni is the needle's answer to silence. Practiced in the Kashmir Valley for centuries, this form of hand embroidery asks a craftsman to draw an entire landscape through a single fine needle, working from the reverse side of the cloth so the face remains unmarked until the last stitch is placed. The jalidar pattern here, a lattice of foliage rendered in fine silk thread on pure Pashmina, belongs to a tradition once nurtured under Mughal patronage in Srinagar's old city quarters. The glacier-gray ground is deliberate: cold and still, so the embroidery can breathe.

to wear it,

How to style

Wear this shawl over an ivory Lucknow chikankari kurta for a winter wedding reception, secured at one shoulder with a vintage silver brooch. For daywear, drape it loosely over a slate-blue cashmere turtleneck and tailored trousers, finishing the look with kolhapuri sandals in tan leather. Those in the diaspora will find it travels equally well over a charcoal wool coat for gallery evenings. In every case, keep jewellery to a minimum: a single pair of silver jhumkas or plain gold studs is sufficient. The embroidery asks for quiet company.

to last,

Fabric & care

Pure Pashmina is fine-diameter Changthangi goat down and resists rough handling. Hand-wash in cold water with a mild, pH-neutral shampoo, never wringing or twisting the cloth. Gently press out water, then roll the shawl inside a clean dry towel to remove excess moisture. Lay flat to dry in shade, away from direct heat. Iron only on the reverse, at the lowest steam setting, with a pressing cloth placed over the embroidery. Store folded in breathable muslin, not plastic, and place a cedar block nearby to deter moths. Handled with care, it lasts generations.
