Georgette Long Kurti with Aari Embroidered Floral Jaal All-Over
Hand-wash gently with mild detergent. Do not wring. Dry in shade, iron on the lowest setting.
Description
Across the entire length of this georgette kurti, a floral jaal unfolds in the patient language of Aari needlework, each tendril traced by hand with a fine hooked needle. Aari embroidery, long practised in the ateliers of Kashmir and the crafts quarters of Lucknow, is distinguished by its continuous chain-stitch rhythm, which allows a single motif to travel across a ground without interruption. Here, that rhythm covers the full field of the kurti, turning the georgette into something closer to a garden than a garment. The fabric itself is well chosen for this purpose: lightweight and subtly luminous, it holds the embroidered threads without weighing them down, and drapes with the ease that the silhouette demands. Four colours are offered, from the vivid charge of Bright Lime Green to the quieter registers of Parfait Pink and Purple Rose, each altering the mood of the jaal entirely. Pair it with straight palazzo trousers in a complementary solid, and let the embroidery speak without competition. A pair of oxidised silver earrings from Rajasthan would be a considered finishing choice.
Behind this piece
Aari embroidery takes its name from the hooked needle, the aari, drawn through taut fabric in swift, looping motions that have defined Kashmiri textile craft for centuries. Practised across the Kashmir Valley and parts of Lucknow, the technique builds intricate floral jaals, lattice upon lattice of petals and vines, without the weight of heavier threadwork. On this georgette kurti, the jaal travels the full length of the cloth, honouring a tradition in which a single skilled hand moves continuously, never lifting the needle until a garden has bloomed across the surface.
How to style
Wear the Bright Lime Green over slim white palazzo trousers for a lunch that calls for quiet confidence, finishing with polki studs and flat Kolhapuri chappals. The Dianthus reads beautifully at a festive afternoon gathering when paired with a draped silk dupatta in ivory and strappy block-heeled sandals. For the Parfait Pink or Purple Rose, consider cigarette trousers in a tonal shade, a structured potli clutch, and silver jhumkas with a minimal stone setting. Each colour rewards understated layering rather than contrast, letting the embroidered jaal carry the occasion entirely on its own terms.
Fabric & care
Georgette is a crepe-weave fabric woven from highly twisted yarns, giving it its characteristic gentle drape and slight texture. Hand wash separately in cool water using a mild, pH-neutral detergent, never wringing or twisting the cloth. The Aari embroidery threads are delicate and should not be rubbed directly. Lay flat on a clean, absorbent towel to dry away from direct sunlight, which can fade the thread work over time. Store folded in soft muslin, away from synthetic fabrics. Steam press on a low setting from the reverse side only, never ironing the embroidery directly.
