about the piece,

Description

Aqua carries the memory of Dal Lake at first light, still and luminous and entirely its own. This georgette saree is worked in Kashida, the chain-stitch embroidery tradition native to Kashmir that has been practiced across the valley for centuries, its motifs drawn from chinar leaves, lotus blooms, and the curving forms of the paisley. The embroidery moves across the fabric with a characteristic density and rhythm, each motif placed with the quiet confidence of a tradition that does not need to announce itself. Georgette lends the drape a soft, weightless quality, allowing the embroidery to rest on the body rather than overwhelm it, so the effect is one of considered elegance rather than ornamentation for its own sake. The bright aqua ground is clear and vivid without being harsh, making it equally suited to a summer wedding, a festive afternoon, or a cultural gathering where texture and provenance matter. Pair it with uncut diamond or oxidised silver earrings to let the embroidery speak. A raw silk blouse in ivory or warm ivory-cream will anchor the aqua without competing with it.

the story,

Behind this piece

Kashida is Kashmir's oldest needle-based embroidery tradition, worked by hand across the valley by artisans who inherit their stitch vocabulary through generations of family practice. Unlike the chain-stitch sozni or the dense aari work, Kashida fills its motifs fully, covering ground fabric with flora drawn from Mughal garden manuscripts. Here, that devotion to surface is carried on georgette, a fabric whose gentle float catches light with every fold. The bright aqua ground does not compete with the embroidery; it deepens it, lending the botanical motifs the quality of something seen beneath clear river water.

to wear it,

How to style

For a winter wedding reception, pair this saree with a fitted ivory raw-silk blouse and kundan polki earrings in gold and turquoise, letting the aqua speak clearly. For a literary festival or cultural evening, drape it in a Nivi style, add block-printed mulmul dupatta, and wear juttis in antique gold. For a festive lunch, tuck it sharply, wear a deep teal or coral velvet blouse, and anchor the look with oxidised silver bangles from Rajasthan. The georgette's fluid drape rewards a pre-pleated or readymade tuck for ease through a long day.

to last,

Fabric & care

Georgette is a twisted-filament fabric that distorts under heat or rough agitation. Dry-clean this saree after every second or third wear to preserve the Kashida embroidery threads, which can loosen if soaked. If hand-washing is necessary, use cool water and a capful of mild pH-neutral liquid; never wring or twist. Roll gently in a clean cotton towel to absorb moisture, then hang in shade. Store flat or loosely rolled in a soft muslin cloth, never on a wire hanger. Keep away from direct sunlight, which fades aqua tones faster than most colours.

Each piece is hand-loomed by artisan clusters we work with directly across India. Small irregularities in the weave are the hallmark of handloom — not a defect.
