Behind this piece
Sambhalpur, set in the river-threaded heartland of Odisha, has woven ikat for generations through a process the local Bhulia community calls *bandha*: threads are resist-dyed before they ever meet the loom, so the pattern emerges only through the weaver's exacting memory. This saree carries that discipline in every centimetre. The woven checks speak to Sambhalpuri's geometric vocabulary, while the Rudraksha border, a motif drawn from sacred botany, holds the pallav with quiet authority. The Galapagos green, deep and considered, is the colour of old forest canopies rendered in pure handwoven cotton.
How to style
For a cultural afternoon or literary gathering, pair this saree with a raw-silk blouse in warm ivory and flat Kolhapuri chappals. The Rudraksha border merits a single strand of rudraksha beads or oxidised silver to stay within its spiritual register. For a more contemporary reading, drape it in a pre-stitched style with a fitted sleeveless blouse in deep teal, finishing with block-heeled juttis. The cotton weight also suits a Bengali-style drape with pleats pressed forward, worn to a weekend art exhibition alongside simple terracotta stud earrings.
Fabric & care
Hand-wash this saree separately in cold water with a mild, pH-neutral detergent, as pure handwoven cotton holds its weave best without machine agitation. Avoid wringing; press gently between two dry towels instead. Dry flat in shade, away from direct sunlight, which can shift ikat colours over time. Iron on a medium setting while slightly damp, on the reverse side, to protect the woven surface. Store folded in a soft muslin cloth rather than plastic, and refold along different lines every few months to prevent permanent crease lines forming in the cotton.
