about the piece,

Description

There are mornings in Lucknow when the light falls soft and the needle moves like a whisper across cloth. This saree is woven in georgette, a fabric whose gentle drape and airy weight make it a natural companion to warm months and festive afternoons. Across its frosty green ground, Chikankari embroidery blooms in the unhurried manner that has defined Lucknow's craft for centuries. The floral motifs carry the characteristic restraint of this tradition: shadow work and delicate pulled-thread stitches that draw the eye slowly, without ever demanding attention. Chikankari, long nurtured in the lanes of the old city, is one of India's most meditative embroidery forms, its beauty inseparable from the patience it requires. The cool green tone deepens the florals beautifully, lending the whole composition a quality that is at once fresh and quietly refined. Wear it with pearl or oxidised silver earrings for a daytime gathering, or pair it with a sleeveless silk blouse in ivory for an evening where elegance is expected but restraint is the highest form of dressing.

the story,

Behind this piece

Chikankari is Lucknow's most quietly radical inheritance. Originating in the Mughal court and taking deep root in the galis of Chowk, this embroidery has been practised by Muslim artisan families in Lucknow for over three centuries. On georgette, the needle work achieves something almost impossible: weight without heaviness, texture without rigidity. Each floral motif on this frosty-green saree is worked by hand, stitch by stitch, in the tradition of phanda, murri, and shadow work. The fabric exhales. The flowers seem to grow from the weave itself, unhurried and entirely sure of their place.

to wear it,

How to style

Wear this saree with a sleeveless raw-silk blouse in ivory or pale gold to let the embroidery carry the eye. For a literary festival or museum opening, pair it with block-printed Kolhapuri flats and a single strand of freshwater pearls. For a formal evening occasion, a fitted brocade blouse in soft champagne and strappy heeled sandals elevate the silhouette considerably. If you prefer the relaxed drape, style it with a simple cotton blouse and silver oxidised jhumkas from Rajasthan. The frosty green reads beautifully against both warm and cool skin tones.

to last,

Fabric & care

Georgette is a crêpe-weave fabric and requires patient handling. Hand wash in cold water using a mild, pH-neutral detergent, keeping agitation to an absolute minimum. Do not wring or twist the fabric; press out excess water gently between two dry towels. Dry flat in the shade, away from direct sunlight, which weakens the fibre and can shift the colour. Iron on a low setting, always on the reverse side, with a pressing cloth between iron and embroidery. Store folded in a soft muslin cloth inside a cool, dry cupboard. Avoid plastic covers entirely.
