Floral Cutwork Border with Crewel Embroidery and Metallic Thread Work
Dry clean only. Store folded in a soft muslin pouch away from direct sunlight to keep the sheen alive.
Behind this piece
Crewel embroidery carries the memory of Kashmir in every woollen twist, though here it arrives translated into art silk, making the craft accessible without surrendering its ornamental soul. The cutwork border draws on a vocabulary of floral motifs that has moved across Mughal court textiles, Kashmiri shawls, and Lucknowi embroidered borders for centuries. Metallic thread work, known in its finer forms as zari, adds a ceremonial register to the composition. Together, these three techniques, cutwork, crewel, and metallic thread, create a border that speaks of layered Indian textile traditions in a single, considered strip.
How to style
Attach this border along the hem of a plain ivory or deep bottle-green silk kurta for a festive gathering; the floral cutwork will do all the decorative work your fabric does not need to. For a wedding, apply it to the dupatta edge of a tissue or georgette lehenga set and pair with polki earrings and kolhapuri heels. A third idea: stitch it onto the neckline of a cotton anarkali to lift everyday occasion dressing. The metallic thread catches candlelight beautifully, making evening and twilight functions the most natural setting.
Fabric & care
Art silk, a woven viscose fibre, holds its lustre only with careful handling. Hand wash in cool water using a mild, pH-neutral detergent, and never wring or twist. The metallic thread is particularly vulnerable to abrasion, so turn the border face-inward before washing. Lay flat on a clean dry towel to remove moisture; avoid direct sunlight during drying. Store rolled rather than folded to prevent crease lines forming across the cutwork lattice. A light steam press on the reverse, with a pressing cloth between iron and fabric, will restore the border before use.
