the story,

Behind this piece

Aari embroidery takes its name from the hooked needle, the aari, that craftspeople in Kashmir and parts of Gujarat draw through fabric with a precision born of generations. Here, that same looping stitch traces florals along a border finished with cutwork, a technique requiring steady hands and an eye for negative space. Art silk lends the ground its luminosity, catching light the way a woven silk would, while remaining accessible for everyday creation. The result is a border that carries the grammar of Indian hand-embroidery without requiring the buyer to compromise on versatility or price.

to wear it,

How to style

Cut this border into a dupatta hem for a sharara set worn to a mehendi or intimate wedding lunch. In blue and pink, it pairs naturally with ivory or blush chanderi, accessorised with silver jhumkas and kolhapuris. The purple and green colourway suits a festive anarkali or a gathered skirt, where the cutwork lifts at the hem with movement. Either way, keep the blouse or kurta understated, perhaps in solid georgette or cotton silk, so the embroidered border reads as the sole ornament it is meant to be.

to last,

Fabric & care

Art silk is a cellulose-based fibre that mimics the drape of mulberry silk but responds differently to water and heat. Hand-wash this fabric in cold water with a gentle, pH-neutral detergent, never wringing or twisting the border, as the cutwork sections are vulnerable to distortion. Dry flat in shade to preserve colour vibrancy. Iron on a low setting with a pressing cloth between the iron and the embroidery. Store rolled rather than folded to prevent crease lines forming across the aari stitches. Keep away from direct sunlight to avoid fading.
