the story,

Behind this piece

Aari embroidery belongs to Kashmir's oldest needle traditions, practised by communities of craftsmen known locally as the Aari karigars, who work seated cross-legged on low wooden frames, coaxing silk threads into form with a hooked awl rather than a conventional needle. The paisley, or buta, motif carries centuries of Mughal resonance, refined through generations of Kashmiri hands into something entirely its own. On this short jacket, that lineage meets a flint-gray pure silk ground: cool, contemporary, and quietly assured. The result is not decoration applied to cloth. It is cloth inseparable from its ornament.

to wear it,

How to style

Wear this jacket over a ivory or champagne silk kurta with narrow palazzo trousers for a winter gallery opening or literary evening. For a wedding guest occasion, layer it above a heavily worked Banarasi saree in deep teal or burgundy, allowing the gray to anchor rather than compete. Off-duty, try it belted loosely over straight-cut cigarette pants in black crepe, with kolhapuri flats and a single gold kada at the wrist. In each case, keep jewellery restrained: the Aari work is itself the embellishment, and a crowded silhouette would diminish it.

to last,

Fabric & care

Pure silk is a protein fibre and responds poorly to heat, friction, and alkaline detergents. Dry-clean this jacket when possible; if hand-washing is necessary, use cold water and a pH-neutral silk-specific wash, agitating only gently without wringing or twisting. Keep away from direct sunlight during drying, as prolonged exposure yellows silk and fades dyed thread. Store flat or loosely rolled in a muslin cloth, never in polythene, which traps moisture. Cedar or neem sachets discourage insects without chemical damage. Treated with this care, the fabric and its Aari embroidery will hold their integrity across decades.
