the story,

Behind this piece

Banaras has woven silk for over two thousand years, and katan remains its most aristocratic offering. Unlike lighter silk weaves, katan is constructed from tightly twisted raw silk yarns, lending it a subtle crispness and a luminous drape that catches light with uncommon grace. The woven flowers here, rendered in blue and gold zari, belong to a floral vocabulary refined across generations in the karkhanas of Varanasi. The flame scarlet ground is not merely a colour choice; it carries the visual language of festival, ceremony, and the particular confidence of a woman who understands cloth.

to wear it,

How to style

Cut this fabric into an anarkali with a fitted churidar and let the woven blue and gold florals do the work at the hem and sleeve. For a wedding reception, consider a structured blouse paired with a silk organza dupatta in ivory or midnight blue. Footwear in antique gold kolhapuris or block-heeled mojris complete the register. Jewellery in uncut polki or temple gold reads beautifully against the scarlet. For a daytime ceremony, a straight kurta silhouette with minimal embellishment allows the weave itself to lead.

to last,

Fabric & care

Pure silk georgette, particularly katan-weight fabric, requires dry cleaning for the first wash to protect the zari threads woven into the body. If hand washing is necessary, use cool water and a mild, pH-neutral cleanser without soaking. Never wring; press gently between clean cotton towels and dry flat in shade. Iron on the lowest silk setting, always on the reverse side with a pressing cloth between iron and fabric. Store folded loosely in soft muslin, away from direct light and moisture, to preserve both the fibre lustre and the integrity of the gold zari.
