the story,

Behind this piece

Batik is among the oldest resist-dyeing traditions in the world, its roots reaching across Java and finding a second home along India's western and eastern coasts, particularly in Gujarat and West Bengal, where artisans adapted wax-resist techniques to local sensibilities. This wrap skirt carries that lineage in its hand-applied wax work, each crackled line a record of the maker's pressure and patience. The ensign-blue ground, deep and cartographic, recalls indigo-dyed trade cloth that once moved between ports. Rayon's fluid drape honours the technique without competing with it, allowing the print's geography to remain the quiet centre of attention.

to wear it,

How to style

Wear this skirt with a crisp white cotton Lucknawi chikankari kurta for a lunch that moves between a gallery and a good restaurant. For evening, tuck in a silk halter blouse in ivory or warm gold and add oxidised silver jhumkas from Rajasthan. The wrap silhouette sits beautifully with flat Kolhapuri chappals on casual afternoons, or with block-heeled mojris when the occasion calls for more intention. The ensign-blue ground is generous with colour partners: terracotta, saffron, and pale sage each read well against it without crowding the batik's intricate surface.

to last,

Fabric & care

Rayon is a cellulose-based fibre that breathes well but weakens when wet, so handle this skirt with consideration. Hand wash in cool water using a gentle, pH-neutral detergent; never wring or twist the fabric. Rinse thoroughly and roll in a clean towel to remove excess water before hanging in shade. Avoid prolonged direct sunlight, which can shift the batik's blue tones over time. Iron on a low setting while slightly damp, on the reverse side, to protect the wax-resist surface. Store folded loosely in a cotton muslin bag rather than compressed in a packed wardrobe.
