the story,

Behind this piece

Velvet has travelled far since its origins in the royal courts of Kashmir and the weaving corridors of Varanasi, where cut-pile fabric was reserved for patrons of considerable standing. This fabric carries that lineage forward. The paisleys, drawn from the boteh motif long associated with Kashmiri shawl tradition, are worked in thread embroidery across a plush velvet ground. Circular mirrors catch light the way they do in the folk textiles of Kutch and Rajasthan, where mirror-work is not ornament alone but a practice believed to hold auspicious meaning. Craft and history meet in every repeat.

to wear it,

How to style

For festive occasions, commission an unlined cape or sleeveless jacket in Jet Black or Jester Red; wear it over a silk kurta with oxidised silver jhumkas and mojris in embroidered leather. The Apricot Gelato colourway lends itself beautifully to a structured blouse paired with a Banarasi tissue saree, the warmth of the two fabrics speaking to each other quietly. Bright Blue cut as a clutch or evening bag requires no further embellishment. For all three ideas, keep accessories minimal; the mirror-work holds the room's attention without assistance from anything else.

to last,

Fabric & care

Velvet is a pile fabric and responds poorly to pressure, heat, and moisture applied carelessly. Dry cleaning is the safest option for embroidered velvet, particularly where mirrors are hand-stitched. If spot-cleaning at home is necessary, dab very gently with a cool, damp cloth and allow to air-dry away from direct sunlight. Never wring, fold tightly, or store under weight, as this crushes the pile permanently. Hang the fabric loosely or roll it around a muslin-wrapped tube. Store in a breathable cotton bag, away from humidity, to preserve both the pile and the embroidery threads over time.
