Behind this piece
Georgette, that famously fluid fabric named after the early twentieth-century French couturière Georgette de la Plante, found its truest expression when Indian textile mills began interpreting it through a distinctly subcontinental lens. This kaftan draws on that translated legacy: a lightweight, crêpe-woven georgette that breathes and moves. The leopard motif, rendered in screen print, belongs to a long tradition of animal-pattern textiles that appeared in Mughal court dress and later in the printed ateliers of Jaipur and Surat. Here, electric green gives it entirely contemporary confidence, rooted in heritage yet dressed for now.
How to style
Wear it as a poolside cover over a solid-black swimsuit with flat Kolhapuri sandals and minimal gold ear-studs for a coastal holiday. For a Delhi dinner or a Mumbai rooftop gathering, layer it over straight-cut cigarette trousers in cream and finish with block-heeled mules and oxidised silver bangles. At a festive brunch, pair it with wide-leg palazzos in ivory georgette, a beaded clutch, and strappy kitten-heeled sandals. The electric green reads well under both natural light and warm evening illumination, making each setting feel considered rather than accidental.
Fabric & care
Georgette demands gentleness. Hand wash in cold water with a mild, pH-neutral detergent, keeping agitation to a minimum to preserve the crêpe texture. Never wring; press the fabric gently between a clean towel to remove excess water. Dry flat in shade, away from direct sunlight, which fades printed pigments over time. Iron on the lowest setting, always with a pressing cloth between iron and fabric. Store folded loosely in breathable cotton muslin rather than plastic, which traps moisture. Treated with consistent care, georgette retains its drape and print clarity across many seasons.
