the story,

Behind this piece

Chikankari is Lucknow's oldest continuous embroidery tradition, practiced in the narrow lanes of the old city for at least three centuries. The craft is believed to have been refined under Nawabi patronage, when artisans were encouraged to achieve a lightness that rivalled shadow on cloth. On this egret-white georgette, the paisleys are worked entirely by hand using the fine pulled-thread and shadow-work techniques characteristic of the Lucknow school. Georgette, with its gentle crêpe texture, is a classic base for chikan precisely because it allows the white-on-white embroidery to catch light without competing with it.

to wear it,

How to style

For a daytime literary festival or cultural gathering, wear this saree with a raw-silk blouse in ivory or pale gold and flat kolhapuri sandals. At an evening mehendi, pair it with a deeply embroidered blouse in rose or soft terracotta to gently disrupt the monochrome. For a formal occasion, a low gathered bun, uncut polki earrings in silver, and a sheer organza blouse will elevate the restraint of the white entirely. The saree's quiet register makes it extraordinarily forgiving across skin tones and occasions, asking only that the accessories honour its subtlety.

to last,

Fabric & care

Georgette is a loosely twisted crêpe weave that loses its memory under heat or harsh handling. Hand-wash this saree in cold water using a mild pH-neutral detergent, gently pressing the cloth rather than wringing it. Do not soak for longer than three minutes. Roll it in a clean cotton towel to remove excess water, then dry flat in shade. Iron on a low setting with a thin cotton press-cloth placed between the iron and the embroidery, to protect the chikan stitches. Store folded in a muslin cloth, away from direct light, to preserve the white.
