about the piece,

Description

Woven from the earth and dressed in celebration, this sling bag carries the spirit of two distinct craft traditions within a single, unhurried silhouette. Jute, that most honest of Indian fibres, forms the body of the bag, its natural texture lending a quiet, grounded quality to the overall form. Against this, Deepika Lohani has placed the exuberance of Banjara embroidery: the nomadic needlework of Rajasthan and the Deccan, here rendered as tassels that catch the light and move with the wearer. Turquoise beads, long favoured in tribal adornment across western India, cluster alongside golden mirrors that reflect tiny fragments of sky. The result is a 12 by 9 inch bag that holds within it both restraint and revelry, suited equally to a morning at a craft market or an evening gathering where considered dressing matters. Pair it with a block-printed cotton kurta in ivory or indigo to let the turquoise and gold speak without competition. It travels well with handloom linen trousers and flat Kolhapuri sandals, completing a look that is at once rooted and quietly free.

the story,

Behind this piece

Jute, Bengal's golden fibre, has clothed commerce for centuries before it found its way into considered design. Here, Designer Deepika Lohani reinterprets it through a Bohemian sensibility rooted in the Banjara tradition, a nomadic community whose textile vocabulary has long been synonymous with mirror-work, exuberant tassels and layered bead-work. The turquoise beads and hand-set golden mirrors carry echoes of Rajasthani and Gujarati craft lineages, where reflective embellishment was believed to ward off ill intent. Each bag is made to order, ensuring nothing exists without purpose.

to wear it,

How to style

Carry this bag against an ivory mul-cotton kurta and wide-leg palazzos for a Sunday farmers-market ease. For an evening gathering, let it rest at the hip over a mirror-worked anarkali in indigo or ochre; the golden mirrors will speak to each other across the fabric. Diaspora dressers might pair the turquoise version with a denim-silk blend co-ord and kolhapuri block-heeled sandals, finishing with oxidised silver ear-cuffs. The sling-to-cross-body convertibility means it moves effortlessly from a gallery opening to a weekend bazaar without losing its composure.

to last,

Fabric & care

Jute is a plant fibre of considerable strength but genuine sensitivity to prolonged moisture. Do not machine-wash or submerge. Spot-clean soiled areas with a barely damp cloth and a small amount of mild soap, working gently to avoid disturbing the beads or loosening the mirror settings. Allow the bag to air-dry fully in shade, never in direct sunlight, which fades natural jute and can cause brittleness over time. Store stuffed with tissue in a breathable cotton bag, away from humidity. Handled thoughtfully, this piece will age with warmth and character.

Each piece is hand-picked from artisan clusters we work with directly across India. Some are handloomed on traditional pit looms, others use block-printing, hand-embroidery, or heritage techniques passed down through generations. Small irregularities are part of the character — not a defect.
