Behind this piece
Sambhalpur, in the heart of Odisha's western highlands, has long been the cradle of double ikat weaving in India. Here, the Bhulia weaver community binds and dyes warp and weft threads separately before a single shuttle is thrown, trusting memory and mathematics to align the pattern at the precise moment of interlacing. This saree's dusted-clay ground speaks to the ochre earth of the Mahanadi basin, while the rudraksha motif, sacred and rhythmic, traces a lineage of devotional iconography woven into everyday cloth across generations of Sambalpuri tradition.
How to style
Wear this saree to a heritage museum opening or a quiet Sunday puja, draped in the Odia style with the pallu pinned at the shoulder. Pair it with a raw silk blouse in warm ivory or deep terracotta to honour the clay tones. A string of unpolished wooden rudraksha beads makes an effortless thematic companion. For footwear, kolhapuri sandals in tan leather ground the look without competing. Those preferring a contemporary silhouette may pre-stitch the saree and style it with a fine cotton turtleneck in off-white.
Fabric & care
Wash this pure cotton ikat separately in cold water with a gentle, pH-neutral detergent. Hand-washing is strongly preferred; if machine-washing, choose a delicate cycle inside a mesh laundry bag. Never wring. Roll the saree in a clean cotton towel to absorb excess water, then dry flat in shade to preserve the resist-dyed colours. Iron on a medium setting while slightly damp, on the reverse side only. Store folded in soft muslin, away from direct light, and refold along different lines every few months to prevent permanent crease lines.
