Behind this piece
Brocade weaving in India carries centuries of courtly memory. The tradition of weaving supplementary weft patterns into silk, known as kinkhab or kimkhab in its most opulent form, flourished under Mughal patronage in Varanasi and later in centres like Surat and Azamgarh. This potli draws on that inheritance: a tight silk ground interrupted by raised motifs woven in contrasting threads, creating surface and shadow in equal measure. The drawstring silhouette itself is ancient, a vessel carried at weddings, rituals, and festivals long before the handbag existed. It holds not just belongings, but occasion.
How to style
Carry the Pompeian Red against an ivory Chanderi kurta at a festive lunch, letting the brocade speak without competition. The Foliage Green pairs naturally with a silk Kanjivaram sari in deep jewel tones, grounded further by antique gold temple jewellery and kolhapuri heels. For a contemporary evening, pair the Milky Blue with an anarkali in soft organza, adding pearl drop earrings and block-printed mojris. Each colourway rewards deliberate pairing: the Tri Colour suits eclectic festive dressing, while Pink and Green complements the warm pastels of a mehendi or haldi ceremony with ease.
Fabric & care
Silk brocade requires gentleness above all else. Do not machine wash. Spot clean with a soft, damp muslin cloth using minimal, pH-neutral soap, and allow to air dry away from direct sunlight, which fades both silk fibre and woven colour over time. Never wring or fold the bag along the brocade panels, as repeated creasing breaks weft threads. Store flat or lightly stuffed with acid-free tissue inside a breathable cotton pouch. Keep away from moisture and mothballs, both of which damage silk. Treated carefully, this bag will hold its lustre across many seasons and occasions.
