about the piece,

Description

Gold does not simply shine; it speaks, and zardozi has always known the precise words. This patch carries the full weight of a craft that once adorned Mughal court regalia, its origins rooted in the karkhanas of Lucknow and Delhi where artisans pressed gilded threads into fabric with the patience of scholars. Each paisley motif is worked in zardozi embroidery, the coiling forms built up stitch by stitch in golden thread and punctuated with sequins that catch the light at every turn. The ground fabric is soft cambric, providing a clean, responsive surface that allows the embroidered elements to sit evenly and without distortion. Conceived as a neck and sleeve patch, this piece is designed to be applied rather than worn as finished clothing, offering the maker complete freedom over placement and garment choice. It is the kind of embellishment that transforms a plain kurta or a simple suit length into something entirely considered. Stitch it to the neckline of a cream silk kurta for a festive gathering, or apply it to the cuffs of an ivory anarkali to bring a quiet grandeur to a wedding ensemble.

the story,

Behind this piece

Zardozi is one of the oldest forms of metal embroidery practised on the Indian subcontinent, with roots tracing back to the Mughal courts of Lucknow and Delhi. The word derives from the Persian "zar" meaning gold and "dozi" meaning sewing. Artisans working in this tradition use fine gold-wrapped threads, sequins, and metal wire to build raised, luminous motifs. These paisleys, so closely associated with Kashmiri and Lucknawi sensibility, carry centuries of courtly memory. Worked onto cambric, which provides a stable, lightweight ground, this patch preserves a living craft that once adorned royal garments and bridal trousseau alike.

to wear it,

How to style

Appliqué this patch onto the neck and sleeves of a white or ivory kurta for a festive look that lets the gold do all the speaking. For a wedding or sangeet, pair it on a powder-blue anarkali with pearl drops and mojris in matching metallic thread. A plain black velvet kurta bearing this patch, worn with a silk dupatta and chandbali earrings, works beautifully for an evening mehendi. Diaspora shoppers may also consider applying it to a linen blazer for a fusion occasion where understated craft heritage is the quiet statement one wishes to make.

to last,

Fabric & care

Cambric is a finely woven, plain-weave cotton fabric that responds poorly to machine agitation. Hand-wash this patch separately in cold water using a mild, pH-neutral detergent, keeping contact with other fabrics minimal to prevent snagging of the sequins or gold-wrapped threads. Do not wring. Press gently between two dry towels and allow to dry flat in shade. When storing, wrap the patch in a soft muslin cloth, away from moisture and direct light. Avoid folding through the embroidered areas. Proper care will preserve the lustre of the zardozi metalwork across many seasons of use.

Frequently asked

Each piece is hand-picked from artisan clusters we work with directly across India. Some are handloomed on traditional pit looms, others use block-printing, hand-embroidery, or heritage techniques passed down through generations. Small irregularities are part of the character — not a defect.
