Description
Some things are made to be carried the way one carries a memory: quietly, and with intention. This iPad cover is worked in denim, a fabric whose weight and grain lend it an unhurried solidity that suits daily handling beautifully. Set against that indigo ground is Toda embroidery, a sacred needlework tradition of the Toda community of the Nilgiri Hills in Tamil Nadu. Toda work is among India's most distinctive textile arts, characterised by its geometric precision, its restricted palette of red, black, and white, and its deeply ceremonial origins in the buffalo-herding pastoral culture of the hills. Each motif is built stitch by patient stitch, in a vocabulary that has remained largely unchanged across generations. The 13 by 10 inch format accommodates most standard iPad models with ease, and the construction is designed for the rhythm of everyday use. Carry it to a creative studio, a literary festival, or a slow Sunday at a favourite café. It pairs naturally with handloom cotton, raw silk, or anything that wears its making honestly.

Behind this piece
Toda embroidery originates among the Toda pastoral community of the Nilgiri Hills in Tamil Nadu, one of India's oldest indigenous textile traditions. Practised almost exclusively by Toda women, it is worked in red and black geometric motifs on a white cotton ground, each pattern carrying clan and ceremonial meaning. The technique is called *pukhoor*, and its angular registers of triangles, stripes, and borders are immediately recognisable. Here, that ancient vocabulary is transposed onto structured denim, creating a piece where a highland tribal art finds an entirely unexpected, quietly contemporary form.
How to style
Carry this cover as a standalone pouch at a museum visit or literary festival, paired with a handloom cotton kurta in indigo or natural ivory. For weekend travel, tuck it into a larger tote and layer with a Kutch mirror-work jacket and kolhapuri sandals. At a gallery opening, let it serve as a statement clutch alongside a Chanderi silk blouse and raw silk trousers. Keep jewellery architectural: beaten silver rings or simple oxidised cuffs complement the graphic Toda geometry without competing with its quiet authority.
Fabric & care
Denim carrying hand embroidery requires a considered hand. Turn the cover inside out and wash in cold water using a gentle, ph-neutral detergent, either by hand or on a delicate machine cycle. Never wring or twist. Dry flat in shade to prevent the denim from distorting and to protect the red and black Toda threads from fading. Do not dry-clean, as solvents may affect the natural dyes in the embroidery. Store folded in a cotton muslin cloth, away from direct sunlight. Handled with care, this piece will deepen beautifully with age.
