Deep-Ultramarine Hand-woven Tibetan Dragon Brocade Patch from Banaras
Dry clean only. Store folded in a soft muslin pouch away from direct sunlight to keep the sheen alive.
Behind this piece
Banaras has long held a particular genius for translation: absorbing motifs from distant cultures and rewiring them into silk with an authority entirely its own. This brocade patch carries the Tibetan dragon, a creature of sovereignty and celestial force, rendered in deep ultramarine through the katan silk and zari interplay that Banarasi karigar families have refined across centuries. The dragon's sinuous form is achieved through the jamdani-adjacent supplementary weft technique, each colour change a deliberate act at the loom. The result is neither replica nor imitation, but a genuine conversation between two great craft traditions.
How to style
Stitch this patch as a centrepiece onto the back panel of an ivory chanderi kurta for a literary festival or gallery opening; the ultramarine commands attention without competing. Set it into the hem of a raw silk gharara in ivory or champagne for a festive afternoon ceremony, pairing with oxidised silver jhumkas and kolhapuri heels. For contemporary dressing, appliqué it onto the pocket of a structured linen jacket worn over wide trousers. In each case, keep surrounding colour muted so the dragon's deep blue and the brocade's internal luminosity hold the conversation alone.
Fabric & care
Pure silk demands cool water and patience. Hand wash this patch separately in cold water with a gentle, pH-neutral cleanser, never wringing or twisting the fabric. If the patch is already attached to a garment, dry-cleaning is the safer choice. After washing, press between two clean cotton cloths and allow to air dry away from direct sunlight, which degrades silk fibre and shifts colour. Store flat or loosely rolled in a muslin cloth, never folded on the brocade face. Properly tended, pure silk retains its lustre and structural integrity for generations.
