Behind this piece
Zari weaving on silk carries a lineage that traces back to the Mughal courts, where gold-wrapped threads were pressed into fabric with the patience of devoted craftsmen. This deep-claret silk belongs to that tradition: the flowers rendered in zari follow a loom-count precision that no digital print can replicate. The technique, practised across weaving centres in Varanasi and parts of Gujarat, demands that each metallic thread be individually tensioned against the silk warp. The result is a surface that shifts between crimson and burgundy in changing light, the zari catching the sun like inlaid jewellery.
How to style
Cut this fabric into an unstitched lehenga skirt and pair it with a contrasting ivory tissue blouse for a winter wedding reception. Alternatively, commission a structured anarkali and let the zari flowers fall along the hemline, wearing it with oxidised silver jhumkas and kolhapuri heels for a festive evening. For the diaspora wardrobe, consider a tailored midi skirt with a plain silk blouse in deep teal; the claret reads as richly formal in London or New York as it does in Delhi. A pearl choker completes each iteration without competing.
Fabric & care
Pure silk weakens when agitated or exposed to alkaline detergents, so dry cleaning is strongly advised for any stitched garment made from this fabric. If hand-washing is necessary, use cool water below thirty degrees Celsius and a pH-neutral, silk-specific cleanser; never wring or twist the cloth. Roll the fabric in a clean cotton towel to absorb moisture, then dry flat in shade. Store folded in a muslin or cotton cloth, never polythene, which traps humidity and damages both silk and zari. Re-fold periodically to prevent crease lines from setting permanently along the same grain.
