the story,

Behind this piece

Bomkai, known also as Sonepuri, is one of Orissa's most revered handloom traditions, practised by weaver communities in the Sonepur region of the Subarnapur district. What distinguishes this sari is its dual grammar: ikat-like body patterning and intricate supplementary-weft work on the pallu, here arranged as bold geometric box motifs. The temple border, a signature of Odishan sacred textile vocabulary, runs with quiet authority along the selvedge. Woven in pure silk, this dark cheddar ground gives the traditional structure an unexpectedly contemporary warmth, grounding old ritual geometry in a colour that feels entirely of the present.

to wear it,

How to style

For a winter cultural evening, pair this sari with a raw-silk full-sleeved blouse in deep ivory or warm gold, and finish with oxidised silver temple jewellery from Odisha's dokra tradition. For a daytime wedding function, a short-sleeved blouse in burnt orange echoes the pallu's warmth beautifully. On a cooler day, drape it with a fine Chanderi stole in ecru. Kolhapuri block-heeled sandals in tan leather ground the look without competing. Avoid heavily embellished accessories; the box-design pallu carries its own architectural presence and needs breathing room to be seen properly.

to last,

Fabric & care

Pure silk is a protein fibre requiring considered handling. Dry-clean this sari for its first two washes to set the supplementary-weft threads on the pallu. If hand-washing thereafter, use cool water with a small amount of mild, pH-neutral shampoo, never wringing or twisting the fabric. Dry flat in shade, away from direct sunlight, which fades silk irreversibly. Once dry, fold along the original weave lines and store wrapped in a clean cotton muslin cloth, never in plastic. Place a small neem sachet nearby to deter insects. Refold along different lines every few months to prevent permanent crease marks.
