the story,

Behind this piece

Zardozi is among the oldest metal-thread embroideries in the Indian subcontract, carried into the Mughal courts by Persian artisans and later adopted with extraordinary refinement by craftspeople across Lucknow, Delhi, and Bhopal. This border unites two demanding techniques: the raised, wire-based scaffolding of zardozi and the pierced geometry of cutwork, a combination that demands steady hands and years of practice. The addition of crystals nods to the jewel-encrusted aesthetic of Mughal textile patronage. What arrives as a trim carries within it a conversation between ornament and architecture, light and void, that spans several centuries of Indian decorative tradition.

to wear it,

How to style

Stitch this border along the hem and cuffs of an ivory or blush silk kurta for a formal dinner or a winter wedding reception. It transforms a plain velvet blouse piece into something worthy of a Banarasi or Kanjeevaram drape. For understated daywear, apply a single strip to the neckline of a straight-cut anarkali in deep teal or burgundy. Pair with polki or kundan earrings to echo the metallic warmth of the zardozi wire. Choose block-heeled juttis in complementary metallic leather to complete the look without competing with the embroidery.

to last,

Fabric & care

Because this border is constructed from metal wire and set with crystals, it must never be submerged in water or machine-washed. If attached to a garment, dry-clean the finished piece. Store the border flat, wrapped in soft muslin cloth, away from humidity and direct sunlight, which can oxidise the wire and loosen crystal settings over time. Avoid folding along the embroidered sections, as repeated creasing weakens the wire structure. Do not iron directly over the border. A light press on the reverse side of the base fabric, using a pressing cloth, is the safest method.

Each piece is hand-loomed by artisan clusters we work with directly across India. Small irregularities in the weave are the hallmark of handloom — not a defect.
