Behind this piece
Crewel embroidery carries the memory of Kashmir's high valleys in every woollen thread. Worked by hand on pure wool, the craft traces its roots to the Mughal court, where Persian florals translated into the dense, looping stitchwork that Kashmiri karigars perfected over centuries. Here, that ancient vocabulary is brought into conversation with crystals and sequins, catching light the way snow catches sun on a winter morning. The result is neither purely traditional nor self-consciously modern. It is simply the continuation of a long and unhurried conversation between skilled hands and extraordinary material.
How to style
Draped over a silk kurta in ivory or ivory-on-ivory, this stole carries a formal dinner effortlessly. For a wedding occasion, pair the Seashell Pink colourway with a dusty rose lehenga and uncut polki earrings; the crewel motifs echo the embroidery of the outfit without competing. The Black variant worn loosely over a fine merino turtleneck and tailored trousers offers clean, city-ready elegance. Ground either look with block-heeled juttis or pointed kolhapuris. A single pearl bracelet is sufficient; the crystals already speak quietly on your behalf.
Fabric & care
Pure wool is a living fibre and asks for patience in return for a long life. Dry-clean whenever possible to preserve the crewel work and protect the crystals and sequins from snags. If hand-washing is necessary, use cool water and a gentle, pH-neutral detergent; do not wring or twist. Press the wool flat between clean towels and dry in shade away from direct heat. Store folded, never hung, in a breathable muslin bag. A cedar block placed nearby will discourage moths without imparting chemical residue to the fibres.
